In the heart of bustling Cebu City, tucked away from the frenetic pace of modern life, lies a culinary haven that beckons with the warmth of home-cooked meals and the nostalgia of family kitchens. Abaseria Deli & Cafe, a beloved fixture for 25 years in the quiet residential area of Kasambagan, is a testament to Cebuano hospitality and the enduring appeal of traditional flavors.
For the love of food and hosting
Abaseria Deli & Cafe’s journey began in 1999, born out of Lalay Jurado Lava’s passion for both ethnic jewelry and hospitality. What started as a small jewelry exporting business soon evolved into a quaint café, where discussions over beads often sparked a need for snacks or “merienda” that turned into home-cooked meals. Mia Carmela Lava, who now helps manage the deli and cafe, shares its history, “The focus was not food initially. However, during these meetings, they would look for a little snack or merienda. So my mother, who loves to cook and has good taste, started offering some merienda to her customers.”
“From there, it grew into the decision to finally open our very own Filipino restaurant and changing the name to Abaseria Deli & Cafe,” Mia continues. From these humble beginnings, Abaseria Deli & Cafe found its calling, transforming into a cherished Filipino restaurant that celebrates the rich flavors of truly local cuisine with Lalay’s personal twist.
The name “Abaseria” itself reflects this journey—inspired by traditional Filipino “abaseria” markets known for their vibrant community spirit and diverse offerings. For Lalay, Abaseria Deli & Cafe isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an homage to heritage and a commitment to preserving the warm hospitality Filipinos are known for.
A hearty sensory experience like no other
Stepping into Abaseria Deli & Cafe indulges the senses with the loveliest local selections, from artisanal pieces to unique handmade souvenirs, even photographs and memorabilia of old Cebu. Patrons are greeted not only by the aroma of simmering dishes but also by a cozy ambiance that feels like an extension of home.
The menu, carefully designed by Lalay herself, reflects her tastes and a deep-rooted appreciation for Filipino flavors. From comforting classics to treasured family cuisine, every dish tells a story of local ingredients and heirloom recipes passed down with love.
Signature dishes like the Crispy Roast Pork, Humba, and Adobong Bangus Belly are beloved staples that keep patrons returning. For those in the know, Abaseria also offers off-the-menu delights like the Abaseria Chilli Crabs, Seafood Paella, and a “deconstructed lechon,” a dish that Manila clients loved, available with advance notice of 3-4 days. These dishes, requiring meticulous preparation, embody the dedication and craftsmanship that define Abaseria’s culinary identity.
Behind each dish at Abaseria lies a simple creative process: Lalay thinks of a dish, and then she makes it. This straightforward approach ensures that every meal served is infused with authenticity and made with the same care one would find in a family kitchen. This commitment to quality and tradition sets Abaseria apart in Cebu’s vibrant food scene.
A typical day at Abaseria begins early, ensuring every ingredient is fresh and ready to delight discerning palates. Lunchtime sees a bustling crowd, from regulars savoring their favorite meals to groups celebrating special occasions. Afternoons are a time for “merienda,” with Fridays reserved for the renowned Binignit—a local delicacy that has earned Abaseria a city-wide reputation.
A culinary legacy of resilience and cultural preservation
Reflecting on 25 years of success, including navigating through challenges like pandemics and natural disasters, Mia pictures Abaseria as having its own niche in the future,” I see it as a unique place for Filipino art and food-preserving its history and value.”
As a first-hand witness of her mom’s perseverance and now part of the journey herself, Mia offers timeless advice for aspiring business owners, “Give your best at whatever you do and never give up.” This resilience and passion have sustained Abaseria through decades of changing tides, reinforcing the importance of dedication and authenticity in culinary endeavors.
Abaseria Deli isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a cherished institution where every dish tells a story of passion, heritage, and the joy of sharing good food with loved ones. Whether you’re a local craving a taste of home or a visitor eager to explore authentic Filipino cuisine, Abaseria Deli promises an unforgettable journey through flavors that resonate with the soul.
