Home is Where the Heart Is: La Casa Vieja and Filipino Comfort Food

Anyone who frequents the city knows that numerous restaurants have since opened their doors to a variety of cuisines with Cebu’s growing interest in exploring new food and flavors. But even amidst all the options we have now been given the chance to enjoy, we often eventually find ourselves yearning for our very own.

It’s simple math, really; nothing just beats Filipino flavors for Filipino taste buds. And for fine dining restaurant La Casa Vieja by KKD STK + BBQ, this is even better served as a full Filipino experience complete with the nostalgic comfort of a traditional Filipino home to complement its wide selection of delectable Filipino classics and specialties.

A Glimpse of the Past

Nestled in one of the corners of Banawa, Cebu, where quaint charm meets the bustle of the city, La Casa Vieja, which translates to the old house in Spanish, stands as a high and mighty reminder of our rich history.

“La Casa Vieja was originally an ancestral Filipino house[…] Over the years, the place has been home to different types of establishments until the owners of KKD STK + BBQ took over and revitalized it into the restaurant you see today,” La Casa’s social media manager, Veejay Aragon shares.

Though there is little known about its origins, its 40s-50s American postcolonial influences pretty much look you right in the eye as soon as you step onto the property. A vintage Volkswagen beetle and a couple of classic scooters greet you in the garage. At two spacious storeys, the house itself is massive and grand—so much so that it’s more appropriate to call it a mansion. But this, however, is also immediately balanced by its interior of warm, earthy touches of Filipino designs. From traditional wooden seats, tables, windows, and ceiling fans; La Casa Vieja definitely goes beyond the regular dining experience with its cozy, welcoming ambiance.

The Soul (Food) of it All

Now I know what you’re thinking; as much as we love restaurants with thoughtful settings, the food is always going to have the last say. Lucky for us, La Casa Vieja, as part of Cebu’s famous KKD STK + BBQ franchise, also delivers in this area not only with the extensive menu they offer but also the food’s excellent flavors that truly capture the essence of Filipino taste.

This can be seen in the list of their crowd favorites, which Veejay believes sell the most because they “remind people of their home-cooked meals filled with flavor and tradition.” From this particular category, we highly recommend their Crispy Pata and Lechon Kawali. Cooked to perfection with a crispy golden exterior whilst being tender and juicy inside—it’s easy to see that these dishes are the equivalent of a well-formulated pop hit!

On a completely opposite note though, they also have a number of often-overlooked items that really need more recognition. This is especially directed to their Sizzling Bangus, a sure standout for its saucy mixture of what seemed to be oyster sauce and bell peppers instead of the usual dry serving. Paired with their garlic rice, this sweet and savory combo is a match made in heaven guaranteed to stay on your mind as soon as it touches your mouth.

Some of their honorable mentions nonetheless include famous Filipino classics such as Pork Sisig, Pancit Canton, and Garlic Butter Shrimp. As for lesser-known dishes, Veejay also recommends their fresh Grilled Tuna Panga and Kinilaw na Isda for seafood lovers, along with their Balbacua if you’re looking for something rich and hearty.

Especially for Us

With its carefully curated ambiance and star-quality menu, La Casa Vieja then stands as the ideal spot for us Filipinos looking to enjoy a culturally immersive dining experience. Whether it may be for enjoying a quiet meal on your own or hosting intimate gatherings and celebrations in one of their charming indoor or outdoor spaces, it’s truly nothing short of a home away from home.

Reconnect with your roots and swing by La Casa Vieja at J. Fortrich St. Banawa, Cebu City, or visit their Facebook and Instagram pages for updates and reservations. Your table is waiting for you!
