Are Tsinelas Making a Comeback? A Look at Islander’s Recent Collabs

The summer season is right around the corner. And one indicator in the shift to warmer temperatures is the greater need to wear more comfortable and breezier footwear options, like the ever-trustworthy tsinelas

Long before the “Copenhagen style” of wearing slippers made waves in the recent international fashion weeks, tsinelas have been a staple for Filipinos.

Tsinelas have always pulled double duty: practical enough for the heat, cool enough to style. Islander slippers, for example, have long been proof of this.

Islander Philippines is a 100% Filipino brand that was established in 1985 by KP Yao. For decades, it has held a strong place in Filipino culture as a durable and comfortable footwear choice. For a long time, Islander was just there. On every doorstep, every wet market trip, every summer vacation. The kind of thing you don’t notice until it’s gone.

This 2026, Islander isn’t blending in anymore.

Recently, Sunnies PH dropped a collaborative line with Islander that takes the classic tsinelas somewhere softer and more summer-forward — and honestly, it just makes sense.

Sunnies PH, the Philippine-based lifestyle brand behind some of the most coveted eyewear and accessories in the country, has always been about looking effortlessly put-together. Their limited-run collab with Islander brings that same energy to your feet through three colorways that feel like a whole summer mood: Whale Shark (sleek black and pastel blue), Sorbetes (pastel pink and cream-yellow), and Isla (pastel blue and pastel pink).

Each pair came with a free mesh bag, which was very much the cherry on top. From beach days to brunch runs, these were the tsinelas you’d reach for without thinking twice.

Before that came something a little bolder.

Carl Jan Cruz is no stranger to making Filipino heritage feel entirely current. The Manila-based designer has built a reputation for taking things that are deeply, unmistakably Pinoy and reframing them for a contemporary wardrobe. So when CJC turned his attention to Islander last February 2026, it felt less like a surprise and more like an inevitability.

The result is Islander by Carl Jan Cruz: a collab that keeps the brand’s iconic striped colorway but stacks it higher, bolder, and with a lot more personality. Three colorways lead the collection: OAS (orange and blue), GUINOBATAN (teal and brown), and POLANGUI (red and purple), all named after Philippine towns, all unmistakably CJC.

Made with rubber and an EVA base, finished with nylon straps and a silk-screened CJC logo, this isn’t just a design upgrade. It’s a reframe — the everyday tsinelas as a full fashion statement, light enough for the heat and stylish enough for wherever the day takes you.

Not every partnership needs a runway moment. For their second anniversary, Pampanga café Porch Coffee partnered with Islander to create Porch-exclusive tsinelas that are perfect for casual café hangouts and summer errands.

The collab merges Porch’s cozy and warm vibes with Islander’s durability and comfort through two limited-edition designs: Acacia Brown (a warm, earthy brown) and Picnic Green (green-and-cream-toned).

It’s a small drop, but a telling one. The kind of collab that says Islander isn’t just for fashion week mood boards — it’s for the everyday moments too. For slow mornings, café runs, and everything in between.

For years, tsinelas have been a staple of Filipino daily life. Islanders, for example, have long been blending comfort, practicality, and cultural significance. Three collabs, three very different worlds: fashion, lifestyle, and your morning coffee run. Islander fits into all of them without trying too hard.

With summer on the horizon, tsinelas aren’t just making a comeback. They were always a cultural icon. Islander is just making sure everyone remembers it. And with these partnerships already under its belt, the real question now is — who’s next on Islander’s list?
