Art on Top: Cebu’s First TOPS ArtFest Heightens Filipino Creativity

The first-ever TOPS ArtFest 2024 brought a burst of creative energy to Cebu, with more than 200 artists and 24 exhibitors showcasing Filipino art at the iconic TOPS in Busay. Lead organizer Enzo Dino, passionate about making art accessible, saw the event as a way to help Cebuanos discover their own connection to art.

“We want Cebuanos to define what art means to them through interactions with the artwork and the artists behind it,” Dino said, capturing the spirit behind the festival.

The event opened on October 17, 2024, with Governor Gwen Garcia, Cebu City Mayor Alvin Garcia, former Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Dino, and his son Enzo Dino. The event was also graced by the presence of Karencitta, singer-songwriter of the hit single “Cebuana”.

The TOPS Art Fest has four main events over its four-day course, starting off with the unveiling of Lamdag: Apotheosis of Cebu by Adeste Deguilmo and a silent auction by multi-awarded Randalf Dilla for the benefit of SHS-B Batch ‘85 and Christina Lee-Dino Foundation. The guests were also able to see the fine prints of Ronald Ventura as well as witness the talented participants of the Plein-Air at TOPS Competition, which included both professional and student categories. Other events include art workshops, art talks, and art demonstrations.

Festival-goers were not only able to enjoy the wide array of paintings and sculptures in the exhibition area located at The Circle, but they also immersed themselves in the massive driftwood sculptures by James Dorann-Webb and the Tapuk-tapok installation by artist Roy Ingente. Indeed, TOPS ArtFest was truly a celebration of art in all its forms.

The first-ever TOPS ArtFest happened from October 17-20, 2024, from 10 AM – 9 PM. There was no separate ticketing fee for the festival, just the regular ₱100 entrance fee of the TOPS development, which applied to all ages.

Exploring Filipino Artistry in Cebu’s Iconic Heights

TOPS ArtFest 2024 was more than an art fair—it aimed to bring the best of Philippine art to Cebu in a way that was personal and interactive. The festival invited guests to explore their own connection to art at their own pace, encouraging visitors to slow down, absorb, and enjoy their journey of discovery. This open approach allowed festival-goers to define what art meant for themselves, supporting the organizers’ mission to make art accessible to all.

The festival showcased a wide variety of artistic styles from across the Philippines, celebrating both established and emerging artists. From traditional realism rooted in Cebu to contemporary pieces from Bacolod and the National Capital Region, TOPS ArtFest offered something for everyone, underscoring its message that Art is for Everyone.
