The most terrible sin one can commit in the sartorial world is not looking like fashion roadkill, but rather having unremarkable and uninspired style.
Looking basic is not at all a bad thing (on a daily basis). However when we’re talking about dressing-up as a practical art form, there is a certain level of risk and imagination involved in the execution. Fashion is supposed to be fun; the moment we start taking it too seriously is the moment we start losing the point. Countless pillars and paragons of style never colored within the lines anyway.
