When the pandemic hit, countless delved into a hodgepodge of activities to fill the considerable hours spent within the confines of their homes—hours that, in an alternate reality, many would have preferred to spend outdoors.
Among these “pastimes” we were compelled to engage in was the pursuit of exercise, of finally having the time for a healthier lifestyle. As a matter of fact, yoga became a valued workout option that you could easily do at home. And let’s be honest, we all had our share of posting our yoga ‘fits on social media during that time—guilty as charged!
Exercising is (what I think) something that comes and goes in people’s lives. There also seems to be a trend that many seem to follow. Before the pandemic, CrossFit was a hit. And before that, there was Zumba.
What I’m saying is, if you were (or still are) dedicated to yoga practice and trust that a workout with a mind-body connection is what works for you, this emerging workout style won’t disappoint.
Pilates is nothing new, but we mostly only hear it associated with Hollywood actresses. In recent times, Pilates studios have been materializing in Cebu. Among these rising studios, one had quite the story.
Floe Baricuatro, now a mother of two, grew up facing considerable obstacles from an ankle surgery that left her weak. Basic activities such as walking outdoors became daunting tasks, so working out seemed out of the question. “I struggled trying to perform exercises in the gym until I found Pilates as a solution as its low impact and my training on biomechanics and anatomy helped me [understand] how to use my body (joints and muscles) in a more effective, safer way.”
“Pilates focus on controlled movements and core strength; not only [did it] help me recover, but [it] inspired me to share its benefits,” Floe adds. This aspect of her journey led to the creation of Motiv8 Wellness Studio, where Floe believes fitness can be both inclusive and enjoyable.
“Seeing Pilates positively impact our clients reaffirms my belief in its transformative power, and I’m thrilled to continue empowering others through movement.”
For many, yoga and Pilates seem, well, the same. Floe tells us the difference: “Yoga and Pilates both offer incredible benefits, but they have distinct focuses. Yoga emphasizes [on] flexibility, balance, and often includes spiritual elements, whereas Pilates focuses on core strength, stability, and precise movements.” In many ways, they are alike, but their approaches and techniques differ.
Starting your fitness journey with an unfamiliar workout style can feel overwhelming. But Motiv8 embraces diversity and inclusivity as fundamental pillars of its fitness philosophy. Regardless of age, background, and body type, Floe prioritizes these factors to ensure everyone feels welcomed and supported. “To ensure accessibility, we offer a range of classes tailored to accommodate varying needs and abilities.”
As a newcomer to Motiv8, participation in a Fundamentals class is a prerequisite before accessing the regular class offerings. This guarantees that everyone is properly introduced to Pilates before making any commitments or considering subscription investments.
“If you’re looking to strengthen your core, improve your posture, and enhance overall flexibility, Pilates could be the perfect fit for you.”
Now, if you’re like me (a work-from-home-girlie-who’s-anxious-meeting-new-people-post-pandemic kind of person), it’d be good to bring a friend. There’d be no more than seven people per class, which, I can say, actually makes it less intimidating for your first time. And it’s a “learn the basics” kind of class, so you can expect everyone else to be new!
“We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive, and we’re committed to supporting our clients on their journey to health and wellness, regardless of who they are or where they come from,” Floe explains.
For a working woman in today’s time, many find it challenging to strike a balance and receive adequate support for their physical and mental well-being. Motiv8 does not fall short of this. Floe shares, “Physically, it builds core strength and flexibility, boosting confidence. Mentally, it fosters mindfulness and reduces stress, promoting positive body image and inner strength. In essence, Pilates empowers women to feel strong, confident, and in control, both physically and mentally.”
And although it is the month for women, let’s not ignore how Pilates can benefit men as well. Many men see being fit as building strength and having an appealing figure. What’s more overlooked is the significance of stability and flexibility in attaining functional strength.
“Incorporating Pilates into [men’s] routine can make [their] strength more functional, helping them perform better in sports and daily activities while reducing the risk of injury,” Floe exemplifies, further highlighting that even many elite athletes integrate Pilates into their training routines, often at the suggestion of their coaches.
In the end, the mission here is to not only sculpt bodies but also to cultivate a holistic sense of well-being. Speaking of well-being, beyond offering Pilates classes, Motiv8 also features an in-house sauna to relieve clients more of that tension garnered from everyday life.
Motiv8 Wellness Studio is currently situated on the 4th floor of 8 Banawa Centrale, Salvador St., Cebu City. For some, it may seem quite the distance. However, Motiv8 already has plans to expand to different parts of Cebu. But even now, Motiv8 has clients from Mandaue, Naga, and Lapu-Lapu. Now doesn’t that tell you something?
