These Are Ways You Can Help Amid Typhoon Odette

We prepared for Typhoon Odette that was about to hit—but the preparation was not enough.

At present, the cities affected by the typhoon are currently struggling including our beloved City of Cebu. While the citizens are doing whatever they can in their power to get through this ordeal, it is not without its hurdles. In times like this, help is very much needed. Here are some of the most basic ways you can help your fellowmen.

Stay Social

Social media, when used right, serves as a great tool for disseminating information. In the case of Typhoon Odette, it keeps everyone updated on current developments; making it useful for those who want to be involved, and also for those looking for resources.

As a responsible social media user, the best way to help out during these trying times is to keep informed and to share useful information. Whether it’s a lead on where to source drinking water, or where to donate, do not hesitate as it won’t only benefit you in your aid to help out, but others who wish to do their part—and those whose essential supplies are almost running out.

Hashtags will always remain an important tool to direct people’s attention to a post related to a particular topic, so follow the hashtags and use them too.

One Person Can Make a Difference

It applies to this situation as well. Some of the ways to help out include being generous with your resources.

Take a long look at your closet and kitchen drawers to see if there are things that you can give like blankets; clothes you haven’t worn in a while; toiletries; and of course food and water to name a few—even camping gears will provide reprieve to those whose houses were severely damaged. Anything you think can help, add it to the box.

If water and electricity is back in your place, or you have a generator—and you’ve done all the necessary precautions needed to ensure safety against COVID—another way to help is to open your home to your friends and family who are still waiting for power and water supply at their place. This gives them time to recuperate, and do some bit of work they haven’t done in a while. Schedule every person who will be coming so the place won’t be too crowded.

Share Your Time

More than financial and material aid, one of the ways to help out is to get active, and have a take-charge attitude. If you’re more comfortable raising funds solo, or donating goods, that’s fine too.

You can also join a community or an organization dedicated to the cause. Do your research on which organization to take part of and reach out to offer your services. Whether it’s loading or unloading stuff in a truck or packing some items, it doesn’t matter. The important thing is that you’re doing your part, and your fellowmen are getting the help they need in this difficult time.
