Five Crystals for the Practical Witch

It’s challenging to explain how crystals work without sounding a little unhinged.

Crystal healing has grown popular over the years, but it is still considered a pseudoscience. There are no stone-cold facts to show that crystals really work, but anecdotal evidence suggests that crystals calm the mind, benefit the body, and nurture one’s spiritual life.

So if you’re interested in learning how crystals work and why even Miranda Kerr keeps a large rose quartz stone by her front door, read on.

Keeping and caring for a crystal is intuitive work, much like tasseography and tarot reading. Some use an amethyst in meditation. Some use specific stones as a conduit for an intention. And because crystals are so beautiful, some use it to adorn sacred spaces.

Each crystal is believed to have a specific purpose so if you’re looking at stones for a specific reason, you can start with these:

Citrine for Abundance

Citrine is a bright yellow crystal believed to bring abundance to its keeper. It’s said to raise self-esteem and confidence.

Use it for: manifesting money and the glow-up you’ve been dreaming of

Where to place it: the far left corner of your house aka the place for wealth according to Feng Shui. You can also meditate with it or wear it as a bracelet.

Rose Quartz for Love

Rose Quartz is a pale pink quartz that is believed to bring love of all types. It can be used to attract romantic love, or to strengthen self-trust and self-love.

Use it for: manifesting your next significant other, or meditate with it before swiping on Bumble.

Where to place it: by your vision board or wear it as jewelry

Amethyst for Spiritual Expansion

Amethyst is a violet crystal believed to benefit a person’s intuition and psychic abilities. At its most basic, it is said to bring calm and ease anxiety.

Use it for: meditation, tarot reading, affirmations, and other spiritual modalities. Place it in your left hand as you sing to I Am by Yung Baby Tate.

Where to place it: at your altar or sacred space, on top of your journal, or under your pillow

Black Obsidian for Protection

Black Obsidian is formed from cooled volcanic lava. It is said to bring protection to its owner and helps to keep negative energy away.

Use it for: protection from psychic attacks or from your ex’s 2 AM “u up?” texts

Where to place it: inside your bag, at the receiving area of your house, or worn as an accessory

Lapis Lazuli for Mental Clarity

Lapis Lazuli is a cool blue stone known to aid mental clarity.

Use it for: making boss moves or when torn whether to check out your cart or not

Where to place it: at your workstation or home office

When you start collecting crystals, know that crystals absorb energy. You need to have them in their pristine natural state. Therefore, cleansing and charging are necessary. Make a ritual out of cleansing your crystals and charge them under the full moon, saltwater, or by smudging them using an incense or palo santo like the true witch that you are.
