Navigating Sugbo Entertainment Expo 2023

Sugbo Entertainment Expo (SEE): Create Trip Summit is a two-day event where local and international creatives in the animation, film, music, and design industries can connect and share their passion for entertainment and media. Among the key highlights of the event included inspiring talks and panel discussions from 30+ speakers, who each shared their own personal insights and experiences from their own fields of expertise.

From Cebu to Manila: The Cinematic Journey of Kerwin Go

Manila-based director Kerwin Go began his talk by sharing some lessons he learned throughout the years in the filmmaking industry.

I was just a guy with a camera,” Go recalls his only qualification in the past in relation to the first lesson. Aside from films, Kerwin has also worked on TV projects including a commercial for Grab which showcased the essence of Visayan humor. When talking about the film that won at the Singapore International Film Festival, he showed the initial trailer for Mina-anud – a short film based on a true story where two local surfers found tons of cocaine on the shores of a fishing village where villagers mistakenly used it as detergent. He then proceeded to show the final trailer and asked the audience to spot what made the final cut and what didn’t.

Towards the end of his talk, Kerwin promoted his adaptation of ‘Keys to the Heart’ a forthcoming Netflix original, and is prepping for a horror film in Taiwan.

Jann Galino: From IT to the Artistic Universe

Huion evangelist and concept artist Jann Galino, originally an IT teacher, also shares his journey in his transition to the artistic universe. His notable projects include the TV series “My Super D” and “Brgy. 143” on Netflix. He talked about the progression of his art career and the importance of building meaningful connections through cons and events. He even shared some photo ops of one of the people he idolized and met through an event, to now working in the same industry with him. Jann also co-founded Iloilo Comic Con and is active in promoting visual arts, a true testament to his love for drawing ever since he was a kid.

Aside from meeting different creatives and listening to the talks, expo-goers can also enjoy free samples of the famous hot chocolate drink sikwate from Philchoco as they navigate the sea of participating merchants and companies.

Indeed, the expo was something any artist, writer, filmmaker, or gamer wouldn’t want to miss. The Sugbo Entertainment Expo is like a compass, pointing in different directions but ultimately arriving at a shared destination, which is an appreciation for heritage and the arts.

The Sugbo Entertainment Expo: Create Trip Summit, a journey to the past, present and future happened on October 20-21 from 9 AM to 6 PM at Il Corso Lifemalls by Filinvest, City Di Mare Cebu South Coastal Rd. It is co-presented by Cebu Pacific, Huion, SM Seaside, and Gcash.
