Craving gooey, cheese-loaded burgers or crunchy, flavor-packed tacos? Head over to Sal’s Kitchen, a neighborhood diner in Mabolo, Cebu City, known for its no-frills approach and great flavors! It has become a favorite among Cebuanos seeking satisfying comfort food.
At 24 P. Almendras Street, Sal’s Kitchen has been serving burgers, tacos, sandwiches, and sausages since 2018. The restaurant features an alfresco-style dining area, making it a great choice for casual lunches, after-work dinners, or weekend catch-ups with friends. Right next door, Turning Wheels Craft Brewery offers a rustic, cabin-inspired atmosphere and a selection of locally brewed craft beers and spirits.
Behind every burger flipped at Sal’s Kitchen is chef-owner Mikel Sala. Born and raised in Cebu, he spent years working in banking and finance in Manila before deciding to pursue his culinary dream. Although the corporate world paid the bills, it wasn’t where his heart truly belonged. He eventually returned to Cebu to study at the International School for Culinary Arts and Hotel Management (ISCAHM) before honing his skills at KAYU: Kitchen + Bar. In 2018, he turned that dream into reality by opening Sal’s Kitchen.

“I have to pay my bills; that’s why I wanted to open my own restaurant. But my vision has always remained the same because my passion is in culinary arts. It will never die with me, and that’s how Sal’s Kitchen came to life,” Mikel said.
Sal’s Kitchen also owes part of its story to Mikel Sala’s longtime friend, Michael Nikkel, owner and brewmaster of Turning Wheels Craft Brewery. After opening Cebu’s first-ever craft brewery in 2014, Michael wanted to offer quality comfort food that would pair well with his craft beers.

When it came time to bring that idea to life, Mikel was the first person who came to Michael’s mind. “Michael was a very good friend to me because he trusted me to open Sal’s Kitchen. The effort he put into Turning Wheels [Craft Brewery] also helped make it possible,” Mikel recalled.
Even the restaurant’s name has a personal touch. “Sal,” taken from his surname, was a nickname that followed him throughout his culinary journey before eventually becoming the name of the restaurant.
What’s Cooking at Sal’s Kitchen?
Ask Mikel what first-time diners should order, and he’ll recommend everything on the menu. He also admits that a few customer favorites have earned their place as the restaurant’s signature dishes over the years.

Leading the lineup are the Shrimp Tacos. Served on soft flour tortillas, they’re generously filled with crispy shrimp, fresh chimichurri, pickled onions, and spicy mayo, creating the perfect balance of crunch, freshness, and heat in every bite.
While Mikel says every dish requires careful preparation to ensure consistency, the Shrimp Tacos remain one of the restaurant’s biggest crowd favorites.
Burger enthusiasts will also find plenty to love. The Double Smash Cheeseburger is a must-try, featuring juicy beef patties layered with melted cheese and classic toppings. Those craving something even more indulgent can opt for the Cheeseburger Deluxe, a heartier take on the classic.
If chicken sandwiches are more your style, don’t skip the Fried Chix Sandwich. Their crispy fried chicken is paired with house-made sauce, crunchy pickles, fresh slaw, and served on a buttery brioche bun. It’s crispy, creamy, and tangy all at once.

The menu also features other house specialties, including the Garlic Butter Shrimp Bun, Ginger Scallion Chicken Bun, Braised Pork Belly Bun, House Burger, Curry Sausage Bun, Smash Burger Royale, Surf N’ Turf Deluxe, Chix Poppers, Bacon Jam Smash, Pork Pibil Tacos, Pollo Taco, and Fish Taco. Hot dog lovers can choose from favorites like the Chili Cheese Dog and the French Onion Hot Dog.
And if you’re bringing the whole crew, Sal’s Kitchen has no shortage of shareable bites to keep everyone happy. Start the feast by passing around the plate with Shrimp Poppers, Sausage Plate Chimichurri, Wontons, Cheeseburger Loaded Fries, Double Smash Cheeseburger Loaded Fries, French Fries, Curly Fries, or Fried Pickles.
To complete the experience, diners can head next door to Turning Wheels Craft Brewery for a pint of locally brewed craft beer or sample several flavors with a curated beer flight.
The Recipe for Success
Nearly 8 years after opening its doors, Mikel says owning a restaurant continues to teach him something new every day. Running a kitchen demands patience, discipline, and teamwork, while maintaining quality requires constant attention to detail.
For Mikel, success isn’t measured solely by full tables or sold-out menu items. It’s about showing up every day, working alongside his kitchen staff, staying consistent, and making sure every guest leaves satisfied.

Sal’s Kitchen has earned recognition from food bloggers, media outlets, and countless loyal customers. But for Mikel, every compliment is motivation rather than a finish line. Every review, every suggestion, and every returning customer serves as another opportunity to improve.
At Sal’s Kitchen, that commitment to consistency is perhaps the restaurant’s greatest ingredient.
